More than 400 prisoners have escaped from the Croix-des-Bouquets prison in Haiti
leaving 25 people including the prison director dead.

The escape which happened from a jail near the capital, Port-au-Prince on Friday February 26, lead to the death of bystanders who were caught up in the violence.

One of those who fled, a notorious gang leader named as Arnel Joseph, was killed hours after escaping.

Joseph, still wearing prison ankle cuffs, was a passenger on a motorcycle that was flagged down at a checkpoint,

According to police spokesman Gary Desrosiers, Joseph, was still wearing prison ankle cuffs when he boarded a motorcycle .

The motorcycle was flagged down at a checkpoint but failed to stop.

Joseph then pulled a gun on officers who then shot and killed him, Desrosiers said.

Joseph was Haiti's most-wanted gang leader before his arrest in 2019.

Eye Witnesses reported hearing bursts of gunfire as prisoners ran away from the prison.

Staff at a nearby clothing store told reporters that the prisoners forced them to give out clothing items.

The Croix-des-Bouquets jail was inaugurated in 2012 and was designed for a maximum capacity of 872 inmates

It's not the first time jail outbreaks is happening in Haiti.

In 2019, all 78 inmates of Aquin prison in southern Haiti escaped while police were distracted by anti-government protests nearby.

In 2017 more than 170 inmates escaped from a prison in Arcahaie, north of Port-au-Prince.

Oby Ezekwesili demands an Independent Medical Evaluation of President Buhari's Physical and Mental Capacity to govern

Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has demanded an independent medical evaluation of President Buhari's physical and mental capacity to govern Nigeria.

The Former Minister made the demand while reacting to the abduction of 317 students from the Government Girls Secondary School GSSS Jangena, Zamfara state.

Her tweets read

''Yesterday I woke to the news of the abduction of over 300 school girls from GSSS Zamfara and the deepest pain hit me into a clamp-up. I rejected requests from @cnni, @BBCAfrica, @channelstv, @ARISEtv etc to be interviewed. What have I not already said these 7 years in Nigeria?

This morning in my personal prayer, I cried out to God, “Was this not why You asked me to STAND for Chibokgirls 7 years ago and give my ALL to their cause?” “Was it not to get @NigeriaGov  to ACT DECISIVELY and forbid abomination from becoming the NORM in our Land, Lord?”

The abduction of 219 #ChibokGirls in 2014 was an ABOMINATION in our Land. What did we not do over the cause of 2 different Administrations to demand Justice for them so it NEVER REPEATS? Two Administrations egged on by their admirers failed to hear us and ACT DECISIVELY.

With 112 remaining #ChibokGirls FAILED by @NigeriaGov, 110 #DapchiGirls happened and #LeahSharibu remains unaccounted for. With #LeahSharibu abandoned, 334 #KankaraBoys happened, then 41 #KagaraStudents and now 317 #JangebeGirls yesterday. Abomination has become a Norm.

When KagaraBoys happened, outraged, I made the strongest possible DEMAND a citizen can regarding the failed leadership of @NGRPresident

@MBuhari. I wrote: Nigerians should collectively ask for an Independent Medical Evaluation of @MBuhari . Nothing else makes sense now.

It is NOT NORMAL for a Leader of a country to be carrying on unperturbed while SERIAL ABNORMALITIES occur all around him. There’s NOTHING NORMAL about the nonplussed manner @MBuharisits in Aso Rock uncaring that Nigeria is falling apart. Nigerians better WAKE UP to this.

My DEMAND goes beyond asking @NigeriaGov of @MBuhari to #BringBackJangebeGirls. My DEMAND goes beyond asking Justice of Rescue for our schoolgirls. My DEMAND is to commence the process for an Independent Medical Evaluation of @MBuhari ‘s Physical and Mental Capacity to govern''

I wrestled with the devils - Olisa Metuh reflects on his life in prison

It is just like being in your house and an armed robber comes to your house, takes away all your earnings, beats you up, violate your wife, deal with your children and you can’t do anything because he has the gun. When we have power, we should know how to use it because there is God in heaven. At the end of the day, all of us will die,” he said

Tiger Woods ‘recovering' after surgery following car crash

Tiger Woods suffered serious injuries to both legs as his car flew off the road and flipped several times on Tuesday near Los Angeles in a crash he was “very fortunate” to survive, law enforcement officials who found the US golf legend said.

Woods underwent surgery to repair “significant orthopaedic injuries” to his lower right leg and ankle, which included the insertion of a rod into his tibia and the use of “a combination of screws and pins” to stabilize his foot and ankle, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center chief medical officer Anish Mahajan said in a statement released on the golfer’s Twitter account late Tuesday.

“He is currently awake, responsive, and recovering in his hospital room,” the Twitter statement read, adding there would be no further updates, and thanking first responders and well-wishers.

Woods did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the early-morning incident, said Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the crash, which occurred on a steep stretch of road known as an accident “hotspot,” where Woods was travelling at “a greater speed than normal,” said the sheriff.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said deputy Carlos Gonzalez, the first officer to arrive at the scene.

Gonzalez found Woods trapped in his vehicle but conscious, appearing “calm and lucid” and able to identify himself to the deputy as “Tiger.”

“It is my understanding that he had serious injuries to both legs,” said Los Angeles County fire chief Daryl Osby, describing Woods’ condition as “stable.”

Firefighters and paramedics extricated Woods from the wreckage of his SUV and transported him with a neck collar and backboard to a local hospital via road.

The 45-year-old, one of the most successful golfers of all time, has won 15 major championships.

He recently underwent his fifth back surgery, and said he was uncertain if he would be able to complete his latest injury comeback in time to play at April’s Masters.

“On behalf of the PGA Tour and our players, Tiger is in our prayers and will have our full support as he recovers,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement.

Woman who didn't know she was pregnant gives birth in a car park just feet away from her partner who was working inside

A woman who had no idea she was pregnant has given birth in an Asda car park just feet away from her partner who was working in the store.

Delyth Jones, 25, thought she was suffering from appendicitis when her contractions started only for her to give birth half an hour later.

When she began suffering contractions, she called paramedics. On their way to the maternity ward, they were forced to stop at the store where Delyth's sister Kate also works in Pwllheli, Wales.

Meanwhile her partner Dean Stawman, 26, finished his shift there oblivious to the drama that was unfolding just feet away.

He only found out he was a new dad when he got home.

Delyth said: "I've had a pain like that before and had been rushed in before, so assumed it was something similar. I phoned my mum and sister thinking it could be back so they came over to help me.

"When they got there the pain changed and the next thing I knew I was on the floor. Then half an hour later he was born."

Kate said: "We rushed over to help because she wasn't feeling well and we thought it was appendicitis.

"At one point she said, 'I think I'm having a baby', and we laughed. So it was quite a shock when it turned out she was right. She really had no idea she was pregnant. She wasn't showing and didn't feel the baby move."

Delyth said she knew the ambulance had stopped at Asda, but everything happened so quickly after that.

She didn't have time for any pain relief – "just a couple of gulps of gas and air" – before Harry was born, weighing in at a healthy 7lbs 7oz.

Delyth and Harry were taken to Bangor Hospital for checks, but were home within 24 hours.

She said: "We were going through Pwllheli in the ambulance when they said we were going to have to stop.

"The community midwife was around and jumped in the ambulance at Asda and 10 minutes later he was delivered.

"I said to them, 'Tell me I haven't just given birth in Asda' and they said I had – and that it would be listed as his place of birth on his birth certificate.

"It must be fate that he was born at Asda with our connections there."

She continued: "It's been such a whirlwind, but it's been so good and I have absolutely loved it. I wouldn't change any of it.

"Dean knew I'd had a couple of pains the night before and knew I wasn't well, but we decided he should go to work as usual.

"He arrived home just as I was giving birth in Asda. As soon as he found out he was ecstatic."

FCT Minister suspends traditional ruler for allegedly aiding kidnappers

FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, has sacked the Chief of Anagada, Malam Alhassan Musa, in Gwagwalada Area Council for allegedly aiding and abetting kidnappers.

The Minister made this known on Tuesday, February 23, during an emergency meeting with traditional rulers and graded chiefs in the Federal Capital to discuss the rising insecurities across the Territory.

Dr. Aliyu said the suspension was based on the confirmation of the security report made available to her.

"Regrettably, we are starting this gathering with security report indicting one of the royal fathers in Gwagwalada Area Council. I don’t know how it will end, but we must begin to look closely at ourselves or activities," she stated.

"Royal stools are now being bastardised by some traditional rulers. The security agencies in their reports indicted one of you and we tried as much as possible to see how we can get to the bottom of the matter. Unfortunately, it was overruled because the report is not ours, it came from one of the security agencies. Therefore, we are not in a position to look into his case.

"It is not in our character, no matter the level of poverty to betray the trust bestowed on you as a traditional ruler and the custodian of our traditions. This will not be acceptable in the seat of government where Mr. President is the Governor General.

"Go and discuss with your various village heads and give them a sound warning that those found wanting will not be spared. And no one has the right to accommodate total strangers or group of people especially now that we are facing challenges of insecurity.

"You cannot accommodate strangers you do not know. The people you accommodate can betray you. The people you habour in your communities can be informats or bandits. At the end of the day, we battle with insurgents,” a statement by the minister’s media aide, Mr. Austine Elemue, said.

She reiterated to them that the administration would not spare any traditional ruler aiding and abetting criminality in this domain.

"Please stay safe and be vigilant always. If you notice strange movements or activities in your community or vicinity, please do not hesitate to report to the nearest police station." she added.

She assured that the FCT Administration would soon embark on “operation know your neighbour, stay safe, and stay alive”, stressing that such move would enable the administration to profile total strangers who do not have any business staying in the nation’s capital.

Nigeria might soon exit second wave of Covid-19- Minister

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has hinted that Nigeria might soon exit the second wave of the coronavirus disease.

Speaking during a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 on Monday, the Minister said the country has been recording a decline in the number of Covid-19 cases.

“On 21st of February 2021, 521 new infections and 8 deaths occurred in 20 states. The sustained testing in states has decreased positively rate.

“We are, however, not drawing conclusions yet and certainly not declaring victory, but rather watching developments as they unfold nationally and internationally, ready to make use of comparative advantages that may emerge.”

The Minister also spoke of an outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in Guinea, noting that the Federal Government is closely monitoring the situation.

He also stated that the Nigerian government is collaborating with the West African Health Organization (WAHO).

A 28-year-old security guard has been charged with causing a disturbance after daring his employer to shoot him with his pistol while demanding his two-month salary arrears amounting to Sh18,000.

Isaiah Mugane, who was arraigned and charged at Milimani Law Courts on Monday, February 22, allegedly committed the offense last week on Friday, February 19.

The prosecution told the court that Mugane confronted his boss, Peter Mwangi, a director at Guardnow Security Company at the firm’s headquarters, where he blocked, pointed fingers and shouted at him, yelling “shoot me with your pistol.”

The accused, who denied the charges, said he went to Yala Towers to demand his salary arrears but at the time the boss was not in his office so he had to wait at the reception.

At the office, Mugane said he met the accountant who informed him that his salary was not ready.

“When the boss arrived, he passed by him and went to his office. When he came from his office, he asked me how much my salary was and I insisted I won’t leave without it because my landlord had locked me out of my house,” said Mugane.

However, according to the suspect, instead of paying him his dues, Mwangi called the police on him leading to his arrest.

Just like him, Mugane’s landlord was also demanding his two-month rent of Sh7,000.

The court released the accused on Sh10,000 bond or Sh5,000 cash bail.
