Reps suspend FG’s 774,000 jobs scheme

The House of Representatives has asked the federal governmet to suspend the special works scheme which seeks to create 774,000 jobs.

The ministry of finance, budget and national planning was asked not to fund the programme scheduled to kick off in January 2021 by the lower chamber of the national assembly which also asked President Muhammadu Buhari to reinstate Nasiru Argungu, director-general of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), the agency in charge of the programme.

The new directive is coming amid clashes between the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Labour, Employment and Productivity.

Though the National Assembly had appropriated N52bn for the exercise in the 2020 Appropriation Act, they faulted the removal of the Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment, Dr Nasiru Argungu, who had backed the parliament in the controversy.
