Expert highlighted five key ways to prevent stroke and maintain a healthy life.

A health expert, Dr. Paul Bolaji, a member of the World Stroke Organization, has highlighted five key ways to prevent stroke and maintain a healthy life. Speaking on a recent health program, he emphasized the importance of adopting a preventive approach rather than waiting until health problems arise.

According to Dr. Bolaji, there are five crucial factors—which he refers to as the "Five M’s"—that people should focus on to reduce their risk of stroke and cardiovascular diseases.

1. Meals

Diet plays a significant role in heart health. He advised people to consume more fruits, vegetables, and drink at least two to three liters of water daily. “Eating a proper diet is key to maintaining a healthy heart. Also, breakfast should not be skipped, and dinner should be eaten early,” he stated.

2. Misbehaviors

Unhealthy lifestyle choices increase the risk of stroke. He warned against smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug abuse, stating, “Indulging in these harmful substances shortens life expectancy. People must avoid smoking, excessive alcohol, and even recreational drugs like cocaine and amphetamines.”

3. Monitor Your Health Regularly

Regular health checkups are essential. Dr. Bolaji compared health maintenance to car servicing, saying, “If you don’t check your blood pressure, cholesterol, or sugar levels, how would you know you’re at risk? Early detection can save lives.” He also cited a study showing that 50% of Africans above 25 years old suffer from hypertension, which increases stroke risk.

4. Move Your Body

Physical activity helps prevent stroke and other heart-related diseases. “The World Health Organization recommends at least 30 minutes of exercise three times a week. Every joint in our body is meant for movement,” he emphasized.

5. Mindset

Having the right mindset about health is crucial. “Many people know smoking and poor diet are harmful, but they lack the self-discipline to change. Taking responsibility for your health is a must,” he said.

Dr. Bolaji also encouraged religious bodies to promote health awareness, mentioning a pastor who organizes free medical checkups. In conclusion, he urged everyone to take their health seriously, as prevention is always better than cure.
