Nigeria's Mass Deportation Begins August 1
Nigeria's federal government has announced a crackdown on irregular migrants, effective August 1, in a bid to address unauthorized migration. The move targets migrants who have overstayed their visas or lack proper documentation, urging them to regularize their stay before the deadline. Those found irregular after August 1 will face arrest and deportation, with the government assuring a humane approach that respects migrants' rights.
Nigerians have largely welcomed the move as a necessary step to address irregular migration. However, concerns have been raised about the potential economic and welfare impacts on affected migrants. The government has been working to evacuate stranded migrants from other countries, with 138 Nigerian irregular migrants recently rescued from Libya.
The crackdown is part of the government's efforts to address the persistent challenge of unauthorized migration. With Nigeria being a major destination, origin, and transit country for international migration, the government aims to regulate migration flows and ensure that migrants are treated with dignity and respect.
