Lagos furniture maker, who was kidnapped last year, kills himself

Nearly a year after regaining freedom from kidnappers, Lagos-based furniture maker Tobiloba Samuel Omoosumi, known as Tobywood, has reportedly died by suicide.

According to The Guardian, it was reported that Tobywood was kidnapped on February 7, 2024, while on his way to Mushin, Lagos, to buy materials for his work. He was released a week late.

After his ordeal, his online activity dropped significantly, worrying friends and fans about his well-being. A friend named Ella described him as one of the happiest people she knew—full of life, always dancing, and cheerful in church even after his traumatic experience. However, she noted that he ended his life just when it seemed he was starting to heal.

There were claims that after his release, the 25-year-old faced online bullying and accusations of lying on X (formerly Twitter). Over time, he went from being a lively social media presence who enjoyed playful conversations to someone who had become isolated.

The deceased was also said to have been in debt, as shown in a message that he sent to one of his clients on February 11, 2025 before ending his life.

He wrote: “Good evening, sir. Please, I am really like this. I've been going through some financial crisis that made me in so much debt, and I am really sorry for not responding, sir. Please just give me a little more time this week. By God’s grace, I'll deliver everything I promised, sir, please.”

However, shortly after he sent the message, news of his death surfaced.
